A digestion is an inorganic chemical analysis process in which hardly soluble substances, very often oxides, silicates or sulfates, are transformed into an acid or water soluble compound with the help of mineralizing agents.
In microwave digestion, the energy is transmitted directly to the dipoles of the polar solvents. The rapidly changing electric field of the microwaves causes the water molecules to rotate and thus heats them up through “internal friction”. One of the advantages of this technique is the uniform heating of the sample, which reduces the digestion time.
Digestion with a mixture of chloric and perchloric acid is also available.
