It is used to produce microscopic preparations which are later to be radiographed, for example biological tissue. In histology (tissue science), the preparation of sections is a basic requirement for the examination of tissue characteristics. The thickness of the sections is significantly smaller than the diameter of a human hair and typically ranges from 0.1 to 100 µm.
