The shear rheometer is a measuring instrument that applies a shear deformation and is thus used to determine the deformation and flow behavior of matter.
The high-priced shear rheometers differ from the low-priced rotational viscometers not only in their higher measuring accuracy but also in their ability to determine not only the “classic” rheological data but also the characteristics of viscoelastic samples in an oscillating mode in which the sample is subjected to a sinusoidal load. In most cases of rheological practice, however, the rotating devices are sufficient.
